Why We Believe in Downeast: Tourism, Community, and the Power of the Outdoors

Over the past few years, Washington County—often called Sunrise County or The Bold Coast—has quietly transformed from one of Maine’s best-kept secrets into a destination that’s beginning to get the attention it deserves. At Downeast Adventures, we’ve witnessed this change firsthand—not only through our RZR and e-bike rentals, but also through the steady growth in visitors at our local inns, including the Machias River Inn, The Inn at Schoppee Farm, and the Margaretta Inn.
This shift really began during the COVID-19 pandemic. As the world reeled from uncertainty, many people looked for places that felt safe, authentic, and open. And for a growing number of travelers, that meant leaving behind the crowded coastlines and commercialized tourist hubs in favor of something quieter, slower, and more real. They found that here in Downeast Maine.
And they’re still coming.
A Place to Unplug
What draws people to this region in 2025 isn’t glitz and glamour—it’s the opposite. It’s the peacefulness of a sunrise over the Machias River, the thrill of exploring the Downeast Sunrise Trail by ATV, and the simple joy of grabbing a cone of wild blueberry ice cream at the local takeout after a day of adventure. They come here to unplug, to connect with nature, and to take in the rugged, rural beauty of a place that feels untouched.
Many locals might not realize it, but we live in what visitors would call a slice of heaven. While we get used to the tides, the forests, and the star-filled skies, someone from away sees it all with fresh eyes. And we believe they’re right to see it as something special.
With the continued growth of tourism comes opportunity—big opportunity. Every visitor who checks into one of our inns or rents one of our machines also fuels the potential for new businesses. That’s why we believe the future of Washington County lies in encouraging entrepreneurs to take a leap, plant roots, and create new experiences for locals and visitors alike.
We want to see more food trucks and family-run diners, outdoor gear shops, artists selling their work, and service-based businesses that cater to our growing visitor base. But more than that, we want to see a collaborative tourism economy—one where ideas are shared, businesses cross-promote, and the whole community wins.
Beyond the Ride
At Downeast Adventures, yes—we rent Polaris RZRs and e-bikes. But our mission is more than that. We want our guests to experience all of Downeast. We encourage them to stop into the local coffee shop, visit the Machias Farmer’s Market, buy flowers for their partner, or pick up a locally made gift at one of our shops. It’s about making memories, not just miles.
We’re also passionate about getting “heads in beds” at our hotels—but even more so, we want our guests to feel welcome here. That’s what makes people return. That’s what turns a one-time guest into a lifelong advocate for our region.
Let’s Grow Together
As we look ahead, we’re excited about what’s possible. Whether you’re a local thinking about starting something new, or a visitor dreaming of one day calling this place home—we invite you to be part of the journey.
Downeast Maine is growing, and the future looks bright. Let’s build it together—adventurously, boldly, and with our boots on the ground
