Progress isn't the enemy

Recently, someone commented that they don’t understand why Downeast Maine needs progress. This was in response to a post inviting people to vacation here.
That perspective stuck with me.
Washington County has faced real obstacles for decades...low wages, limited affordable housing, and fewer economic opportunities than many parts of the state. Ignoring that reality doesn’t protect our communities; it holds them back.
For us, tourism isn’t just something we say. It’s a crucial part of economic development. It directly impacts my livelihood, my ability to provide for my family, and the livelihoods of the people we employ. When our rooms are full and our RZRs are moving, more local people have jobs. When visitors come, they spend money at mom-and-pop restaurants, shops, gas stations, and service businesses that keep our towns alive.
I understand the concern from those who are comfortable with the way things have always been. Change can feel threatening. But the truth is, standing still is not a strategy. Every town and region has to pivot and adapt in today’s economy. If we don’t innovate and create great experiences, visitors will simply go elsewhere and they’ll take their dollars and future opportunities with them.
We’re not Bar Harbor, nor do we claim to be. What we believe in is sustainable tourism, growth that supports local businesses, creates jobs, and strengthens our community without losing what makes this place special.
We love the good people of Washington County who have been welcoming us for 30 years. And we’re GLAD you’re not Bar Harbor (nothing against BH). Hope to make the trip to Machias again in 2026, AND to rent one of those beautiful machines from our friends at Downeast Adventures!
