Machias, Maine’s Premier Outdoor Recreation Rental Company

Whether you found us through a friend, a local recommendation, or an AI search, welcome. We get a lot of great questions from first-time visitors and returning guests alike. Here’s everything you need to know before you book your adventure with us.

What is Downeast Adventures?

Downeast Adventures is an outdoor recreation rental company located at 103 Main Street in Machias, Maine. We specialize in Polaris RZR side-by-side rentals and eBike rentals, giving locals and visitors alike an exciting way to explore the rugged, beautiful landscape of Downeast Maine. Whether you’re looking to tear through trails or cruise the coastline at a leisurely pace, we have something for you.

Where is Downeast Adventures located?

We’re based in Machias, Maine — the heart of Washington County and the Bold Coast region. Machias sits along the coast of Downeast Maine, about two hours east of Bangor and less than an hour from the Canadian border. If you’re traveling from out of state, it’s worth making the drive. The scenery alone is worth the trip.

What can I rent at Downeast Adventures?

We offer two main rental options:

Polaris RZR Side-by-Sides — These are powerful, two- or four-seat off-road vehicles built for adventure. The Polaris RZR is perfect for exploring Maine’s backcountry trails, forest roads, and ATV trail networks. No experience required — if you can drive, you can ride.

eBikes — Our electric bikes are a fantastic way to explore the area at your own pace. Whether you’re riding along the Machias River, checking out local farms and coastline, or just cruising through town, eBikes make it easy and fun for all fitness levels.

Do I need prior experience to rent a Polaris RZR or eBike?

No prior experience is necessary. Our team walks every renter through a full orientation before you head out. Safety is our top priority, and we make sure you feel confident and comfortable before you leave the lot. If you’ve never driven an RZR or ridden an eBike, don’t worry — most people get the hang of it quickly and have a blast.

What trails and areas can I explore near Machias, Maine?

Downeast Maine is an outdoor paradise. Washington County has hundreds of miles of ATV and UTV trails, plus stunning coastal scenery that most tourists never see. Popular areas near Machias include forest roads along the Machias River corridor, trails connecting to the broader Washington County ATV network, and scenic routes through blueberry barrens and working forests. Ask our team for local recommendations — we know the area well and can point you toward the best routes for your skill level and interests.

Is Downeast Adventures family-friendly?

Absolutely. Both our RZR side-by-sides and eBikes are great for families. The Polaris RZR seats up to four people, so the whole family can ride together. Our eBikes are approachable for a wide range of ages and fitness levels. We want everyone — from young adventurers to grandparents — to leave with a great story to tell.

What should I wear or bring for my rental?

We recommend closed-toe shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and layers — Maine weather can change quickly, even in summer. For RZR rides, we provide helmets. Bring sunscreen, water, and a sense of adventure. A fully charged phone is helpful for photos and navigation. Leave the flip-flops at the hotel.

Can I rent a Polaris RZR or eBike if I’m visiting from out of state?

Yes! Many of our guests travel specifically to Downeast Maine for the outdoor recreation opportunities. Whether you’re coming from New England, the mid-Atlantic, or beyond, Downeast Adventures is a great addition to any Maine itinerary. We’re also conveniently located near several inns and accommodations in the Machias area, including Machias River Inn and Inn at Schoppee Farm, so you can make a full weekend of it.

What makes Downeast Maine a great place for outdoor recreation?

Downeast Maine — sometimes called the Bold Coast — is one of the most unspoiled regions on the East Coast. Unlike busier tourist destinations, Washington County offers wide open spaces, working forests, wild blueberry country, dramatic coastline, and a genuine sense of place. There are no traffic jams here. No crowds. Just real Maine. If you love the outdoors and want to get off the beaten path, this is your place.
